Lophelling School was founded in 1999 and is situated at an altitude of 3500 metres above sea level. The name Lophel Ling means awakening spirit. Manang is near the Tibetan border. The school offers child refugees from Tibet and the children of surrounding villages education from infants’ day-centre and pre-school to third school class. The school closes for the coldest months of winter.
There are presently just 60 children from five to ten years old at Lophelling School. They are all from very poor circumstances. Most of them board because many of their families live some days of marching away. Their parents mostly struggle to subsist from farming and from seasonal tourist trade with modest teashops and restaurants
The children transfer to Mount Kailash School in Pokhara after School Class Three, and four years later to the SOS High School also in Pokhara
