Namgyal Higher Secondary School is a non-profit foundation of 1988. This 100% boarding school teaches the upper secondary curriculum to Tibetan refugees and Nepalese children. The school’s ideal is complete education for its children. Tibet’s cultural heritage and spiritual traditions are taught, and so are the skills and knowledge of modern learning in clear scientific structure. Half of these young people are Nepalese and half of them Tibetan. The school has between 360 and 450 pupils ranging in age from 12 to 20. They are taught English, Nepalese, Tibetan, Mathematics, Science, Social Sciences, Computer Science, Tibetan Dance and Music.
Since the children often come from far away homes they live in the boarding school during the years of their schooling where they experience, alongside their curriculum, a social environment with familiar structures. Besides cooking their own meals, these include common chores such as tidying dormitories or setting the tables.
The school has a solid infrastructure and boasts a good football team as well as basketball and badminton courts.
Each year an active group of representatives are elected which act as a liasion between students and administration. This student government organizes various activities with the aim of improving the educational standards of fellow pupils. Thanks to the support of their sponsors, the 12th graders are able to make cultural field trips to Dharamsala. There they have the opportunity of meeting H.H. the Dalai Lama and receiving his teaching. It is an important experience for the students to meet Tibet’s spiritual leader. On this occasion they also have the chance to learn about the Tibetan Exile Government and how it functions. This is an important and enriching event for the 12th graders.
Costs:
A sponsorship for a child at the Namgyal Higher Secondary costs CHF 550 per year. Your money buys tuition, school materials, food, medical care and accommodation, and may be paid direct to our sponsorship account in Switzerland (details at foot of page). We are able to forward the funds without administrative cost.
