Many girls and women never had the chance to go to school. So 20 nuns and their teachers built the Sherab Choling Institute themselves in 1995, and HH The Dalai Lama blessed it. The purpose is to repair the neglected education of women in the Spiti Valley, where the population is of ethnic Tibetans. They have an ancient Tibetan culture and speak an old Tibetan dialect.
A new nunnery was built recently. Its site in the village of Morang, between Manali and Tabor, is remote. The Road between Manali and Tabor is impassable for several months of the year. Winter is long and harsh and landslides are frequent. The nuns are content and bring a large degree of engagement to their studies, although life at 4000 Metres altitude is not quite easy
46 nuns aged from 7 to 59 presently live there, with three teachers. The novices also attend the government school up to Indian School Grade 5. The 17-year study of Buddhist Philosophy available at the nunnery has modules in Tibetan, Hindi and English. The nuns set an example for other girls, and so contribute to the preservation of their own cultural roots and the gift of Tibetan culture and religion to future generations
The region has few nunneries
Sponsorsing a nun at the Sherab Choling Institute costs CHF 480 per year. The money pays for food, clothing, school materials and medical care. The money is used in common as in Tibetan monastic schools it always is, and it’s also possible to make a gift simply to the nunnery
If you are interested in helping the Sherab Choling nunnery or in sponsoring a nun, please contact the administrator of this sponsorship program beatrice@oldtibetfreunde.interweavers.ch. Beatrice Güdel will get back to you as soon as possible and will send a CV with photograph and supplementary information. (Kode=SCI)
