The project for Tibetan nuns was founded in 1991 to offer a Buddhist education and humanitarian help to refugee nuns from Tibet and to nuns from all Himalayan regions. Patrons are the Tibetan Women’s Association, the Department of Religion and Culture (Tibetan Government in Exile), and the Office of His Holiness The Dalai Lama
About 600 nuns currently live in six different nunneries centred on Dharamsala. They are the Geden Choeling (139 nuns, Gelugpa tradition), Tilokpur (65 nuns, Kagyu tradition), Dolma Ling (238 nuns, of all traditions), Shugsep (58 nuns, Nyingma tradition), Sakya nunnery in Dehra Dun (51 nuns Sakya tradition) and the Sherab Choeling (45 nuns, all traditions)
Each nunnery abides by its own Buddhist tradition. Studies available among these nunneries are Buddhist Philosophy (17 years), Lopon Stage (9 years) and other grades of Buddhist discipline, plus Tibetan, English, Mathematics, IT, Buddhist ritual, among other paths of learning.
